Lord John Monson, the 11th Baron Monson of Burton, died in hospital on February 12th 2011 following a fall at his London home.
A crossbench hereditary peer, Lord Monson was a doughty campaigner for civil liberties and an outspoken member of the Upper House. He was one of the 90 hereditary peers chosen to remain in the House of Lords after most were ejected in 1999. As president of the Society for Individual Freedoms, Lord Monson often spoke out in Parliament on the issue of civil liberties.
When a blind man was asked to get off a bus because his guide dog had offended a passenger, thought to be Muslim, Lord Monson tabled questions in the House raising the issue of whether individuals should be permitted to object to dogs on grounds of faith or culture. He campaign vigorously against the smoking ban in public places and opposed the ban on foxhunting. He voted strongly against laws to stop climate change and laws promoting equal gay rights.
The son of the 10th Baron Monson and Bettie Northrup Powell, he was educated at Eton College and at Trinity College, Cambridge. In 1958, he succeeded to his father's barony becoming the 11th Baron Monson. As president of the Society for Individual Freedom, Lord Monson supported "the traditional freedoms and liberties of the British citizen".
He is survived by his wife Emma and three sons, including Nicholas Monson, 55, a journalist who will inherit the title as the 12th Baron Monson of Burton. Nicholas said: "Even when his health was failing, the measure of the man was a successful campaign to achieve national recognition for the blind so they would never again be refused access to transport by those empowered to object to their guidedogs for archane cultural and religious reasons."
